Great News About Haiti and the Caribbean Newspaper Digital Library

Did you know that there is a special collection for historic newspapers from the island countries in the Caribbean? It is called the Caribbean Digital Newspaper Library (CBNL), which is part of the Digital Library of the Caribbean​ (DLOC). DLOC has a wide variety of digitized materials as well as newspapers.

The CBNL Newspaper Library has about 220 different titles from most of the island countries in the Caribbean. If you have relatives or ancestors from the islands, it is definitely worth searching this free online historical newspaper collection.

In terrific news regarding Haiti historic newspapers, here is a summary of a new exciting project from the caribbeanhistories.com website:

“The British Library’s Endangered Archives programme contributes to the preservation of archival material that is in danger of destruction, neglect, or physical deterioration world-wide.  In exciting news for historians of Haiti, the Endangered Archives programme has just approved a grant to work with the Bibliothèque Haïtienne des Frères de l’Instruction Chrétienne (BHFIC) in Port-au-Prince to digitise ninety-one Haitian newspapers published between 1813 and 1913. As set out in the Project overview, the material in the collection has been identified as BHFIC staff as vulnerable to degradation.”
