Birth and baptism records appear in church registers, civil vital records, and family documents. These records often include terminology related to religious rites, parentage, and community participation. Understanding these terms helps interpret both civil and ecclesiastical birth documentation.

Christening Another term for baptism, often used in Anglican traditions.
Clergyman Minister performing religious rites.
Confirmation Religious rite affirming baptismal faith, usually later in life.
Congregation Community of worshippers belonging to a church.
Curate Assistant minister in a parish church.
Date of Baptism Date religious ceremony occurred.
Date of Birth Actual birth date of the child.
Denomination Religious tradition of church performing baptism.
Entry Individual record in register.
Father Recorded parent of baptized child.
Godchild Child sponsored during baptism.
Godfather Male sponsor during baptism ceremony.
Godmother Female sponsor during baptism ceremony.
Illegitimate Child born to unmarried parents (historical term).
Infant Baptism Baptism performed shortly after birth.
Legitimized Child recognized as legitimate after parents’ marriage.
Maiden Name Birth surname of mother.
Midwife Person assisting childbirth.
Minister Religious leader performing baptism.
Mother Female parent listed in birth or baptism record.
Naming Ceremony Religious or social event naming child.
Natural Child Historical term for child born outside marriage.
Parish Local church district.
Parish Register Official church record book.
Parentage Identification of parents.
Paternity Legal acknowledgment of fatherhood.
Priest Clergy member authorized to perform sacraments.
Rector Clergyman responsible for parish.
Register Entry Individual listing within church record book.
Sacrament Religious rite considered sacred.
Sponsor Individual witnessing or supporting baptism.
Stillbirth Birth of a child who did not survive delivery.
Witness Person present during ceremony.
Baptismal Font Basin used for baptismal water.
Parish Clerk Church official responsible for record keeping.
Register Book Physical volume containing entries.
Legitimate Child born within marriage.
