AncientFaces is a community-driven collection of photos. You can search by name but also browse by themes, people categories, date ranges, and places. And the collaborative biography section is an exciting idea.
From the website: “AncientFaces.com was officially launched in 2000 by Founder & Creator Daniel J. Pinna, and his mother, Founder & Community and Content Director Kathy Pinna. Over time, AncientFaces has grown from just a few people with a simple concept that has evolved into a mission shared by millions around the world. AncientFaces is a family-friendly community to share memories about our loved ones, and to connect with others who remember them. Family, friend, or fan – remember yesterday to make new connections and discoveries today, and preserve for tomorrow.

I liked the way you framed AncientFaces as more than a search database. The collaborative biography angle matters because an old photo without names, places, or context can lose much of its value for future family researchers. One thing I usually suggest is saving an untouched scan alongside any enhanced or repaired version, so descendants can see what changed. Do you usually recommend adding notes when a family photo has been digitally improved?
I think that anything that changes the original deserves to be explained, unless thay are repairing scratches, folds or creases.
