Free Online Genealogy Website of the Day – Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database is a website that is provided by the National Park Service (NPS).

From the website: “The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) is a database containing information about the men who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. Other information on the site includes histories of Union and Confederate regiments, links to descriptions of significant battles, and selected lists of prisoner-of-war records and cemetery records, which will be amended over time. The CWSS is a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and several public and private partners whose goal is to increase Americans’ understanding of this decisive era in American history by making information about it widely accessible.”

There are over 6 million entries in the Soldiers database and 17,000 in the Sailors database. You can search by name, and then filter by side, state, and battle unit function.

In addition, there is an abundance of other information, such as stories, mini-biographies of pertinent people, as well as key places in the war.

Not only is the database itself significant for tracking down your Civil War Soldier or Sailor, but the website has a ton of information and facts about the war itself.

This is an important website. To access the site, go to www.NPS.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.htm
