Idaho Online Historical Newspapers Summary

The Ancestor Hunt regularly adds and updates new collection links, as well as searches for and fixes broken links.
(This page's most recent update is April 2025)

Idaho is one of the states that does not have a single central online state repository for searching historical newspapers, but they use the Library of Congress Chronicling America site as their main site for searching old newspapers. There are several free online newspapers on other sites and collections available on subscription sites. Below is a list of where the titles are stored and the link so that you can access them.

There are about 750 newspapers that have been published in the Gem State – certainly not all of them are searchable online. But there are several that are indeed available. So go for it – find your Idaho ancestors and all the interesting articles that capture the stories of their lives.

Please note that I have not always entered the dates that are included in the collections, as I suspect they will change as more items are digitized. Also, I suspect that some of these links may change over time – so if there is a dead link – please use your favorite search engine to find their new location.

THANK YOU I just found my grandfather’s obit from 1919. I don’t believe my mother who was 10 at the time ever saw this. It was published in a very small town in Idaho,Paris.

I have been working on adding Historical Newspapers, covering North Central Idaho, primarily the Clearwater Valley. I have completed Orofino Tribune 1910-1922 and I am currently working on the Pierce City Miner 1902-1911. They are searchable but keep in mind this is a workin progress and will evolve. My site is free to everyone and hopefully you find something that helps solve a family puzzle.

The Lewiston Morning Tribune, which covers North Central Idaho, has added a fee based archives, for their paper. LMT was available on GenealogyBank, then went away. LMT is available on Google Archives but there are more papers and articles available, in the archives, which can be searched for free.
Here is my work around:
1. I search/query via Newsbank. https://lmtribune.newsbank.com/
2. Look at the paper’s date for the article I want
3. Go to Google Archives and browse within the paper for the date. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=BtfE7wd9KvMC&dat=19161011&b_mode=2&hl=en
4. If the paper is there I go through it to find the article and if found, use snipping tool, to clip it.
5. If it isn’t there, I can download it, or view it on the Newsbank site (step 1)
Note: I have found some pages missing on Google Archives, so check the page numbers, for gaps. Also, keep in mind if you open the article on NewsBank, it will count as one of the items, toward the # you purchased.
I hope this helps.
