Obituaries are valuable sources of genealogical information, but they are not always available or easy to locate. Understanding why an obituary may be missing can help guide research toward alternative sources.
No Obituary Was Published
- Family chose not to publish one – Cost or personal preference.
- Death occurred in earlier period – Obituaries less common historically.
- Rural communities – Limited newspaper coverage.
- Sudden or isolated death – No formal announcement made.
Published in Unexpected Location
- Obituary published in another town – Often where relatives lived.
- Appeared in place of former residence – Not current location.
- Printed in ethnic or religious newspaper – Outside mainstream press.
- Published near place of burial – Rather than place of death.
Newspaper Coverage Gaps
- Newspaper for that area/time period no longer exists – Lost publication.
- Missing issues – Gaps in surviving newspapers.
- Not yet digitized – Exists but not searchable online.
- Poor OCR indexing – Difficult to locate in digital databases.
Name Variations and Errors
- Misspelled name in publication – Difficult to locate.
- Use of initials or nickname – Not searchable under expected name.
- Married vs maiden name differences – Particularly for women.
- Anglicized or alternate name forms – Especially for immigrants.
Search Limitations
- Search terms too narrow – Missing variations or abbreviations.
- Lack of wildcard use – Overly strict searches.
- Searching only one database – Missing coverage elsewhere.
- Overreliance on exact phrase searches – Missing flexible results.
Alternative Record Exists Instead
- Death notice instead of obituary – Shorter announcement.
- Funeral notice only – Focus on service details.
- Probate notice published – Legal announcement replacing obituary.
- Cemetery or church records – Only documentation of death.
