Free Online Genealogy Website of the Day – Chronicling America

Chronicling America is a nationwide database of online newspapers available for free for any researcher. The site was started in 2005 as a result of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), which is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Library of Congress. It went live in 2007. Every year NEH provides grants to about ten or so states to digitize approximately 100,000 historical newspaper pages from that state. Certain technical requirements must be met so that the resulting digitized files can be imported into the Chronicling America database.

As of 2022, all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands are part of the NDNP. New Hampshire just joined in 2022 and was awarded a grant, so we soon will see newspapers from all 50 states in the Chronicling America database. Recently, Chronicling America surpassed 20 million digitized newspaper pages in its database. The range of dates for these newspapers is between 1777 and 1963.
