Local histories are one of the most overlooked resources in genealogy — but they often contain more narrative detail about ancestors than official records. Small-town histories, county historical volumes, centennial celebration books, and community anniversary publications were written to document local people, families, events, and achievements.
Because many were produced for a town’s 50th, 75th, or 100th anniversary, they’re sometimes called centennial, semi-centennial, or jubilee books — all meaning the same thing: deeply local history full of names and life details.
These publications frequently include biographical sketches, pioneer lists, military service notes, business histories, school rosters, church roll books, and early settlement stories — gold for genealogists.
